Why we stuff KONG toys and healthy stuffing with The Honest Kitchen

A lot of people recognize the red rubber KONG® Classic as a play toy, but did you know stuffing a KONG provides dogs with multitude means of enrichment?

Stuffable Rubber KONG Toys

Today, KONG has nine stuffable styles of our classic rubber dog toys, plus four strengths to choose from for each type of chewer and life stage.

Reasons to Stuff

Enrichment

Stuffing a KONG gives dogs (and cats) enrichment by using the toy like a puzzle feeder and encouraging natural chewing instincts in a healthy and safe way.

Cognitive Enrichment

Stuffing a KONG makes our pets work for their food like they would in the wild, requiring them to use their cognitive skills to get the food out, in turn keeping them occupied longer than eating from a bowl of food.

Sensory Enrichment

Stuffing KONGs with different types of foods and treats each day gives your pets sensory enrichment through varying tastes, smells, and textures. Rotating the style of KONGs used throughout the week provides dogs with tactile enrichment.

Environmental Enrichment

Create environmental enrichment by giving your dog a KONG in different locations throughout your home or yard. Further, once your dog understands the idea of chewing a stuffed KONG, you can hide them in different areas around the home for them to “hunt” and enjoy chewing once they’ve found their KONG.

Slow Feeding

Slow feeding can be used for two reasons:

Weight Management

Slowing your dog’s eating gives them a stronger mind-body connection, allowing time to process when they are full, instead of eating hurriedly from a bowl. You can break up mealtimes by stuffing two or three KONGs with smaller portions throughout the day. Be sure the smaller amounts total what your dog should be eating in a day for their ideal body weight. Talk to your vet about your dog’s ideal body weight, and read the nutrition label on their food for the suggested serving size.

Healthy Digestion

Eating food at a slower pace, especially for dogs prone to stomach torsion and bloating, helps their bodies digest food more efficiently. Like above, breaking mealtimes up into smaller increments may help ease frequent stomach upsets.
