Choosing the Right KONG®
The iconic red KONG Classic has delivered countless tail wags and happy memories since 1976. It is the foundation of KONG enrichment toys. We believe every dog is unique, which is why we offer a range of toys of varying rubber strengths, sizes, and styles for every dog’s needs.
KONG Rubber Colors and Strengths
Did you know that the color of a rubber KONG toy signals its durability and the life stage or chewing style it’s best suited for? Let’s break it down.
Pink and Blue
KONG Puppy, made from pink and blue rubber, is designed to be soft and durable for puppies 9-months-old and younger, as well as light chewers. Customized for a growing puppy’s 28 baby teeth, gentle pink and blue rubber toys help teach appropriate chewing behavior and make crate training easier. When stuffed and frozen, they also become the perfect outlet for teething puppies and extend playtime.
Purple
Just like puppies and adult dogs, senior dogs still need daily play sessions to live happier and healthier lives. The purple KONG Senior is made from comfortable, soft rubber for gentle chewers and aging dogs who may be missing teeth but still love a good challenge. Not only does KONG Senior encourage playtime throughout your pup’s golden years, but it also provides critical mental and physical stimulation that keeps them feeling young.
Red
The red rubber KONG Classic has been a staple for dogs around the world for nearly 50 years! Its unique, natural rubber formula offers ultra-durability and an erratic bounce, making it ideal for most adult dogs. KONG’s red rubber withstands average chewers while offering a mentally stimulating play experience that exercises their instinctual behaviors. The red KONG Classic is also ideal for stuffing and freezing to create an even more enticing challenge.
Black
For the most powerful chewers, the black KONG Extreme is the ultimate challenge. The most durable strength of KONG rubber, the selection of black rubber toys offers a long-lasting solution that provides enrichment and satisfies the instinctual needs of even the toughest chewers. Stuff and freeze any of the black rubber Extreme toys for even longer-lasting fun.
Choosing the Right Size
Whether your companion is a 5-pound Chihuahua or a 200-pound Mastiff, there’s a KONG toy that’s just right for them! KONGs come in six different sizes, with a general guideline based on your dog’s weight:
XS — Up to 5 lbs
S — Up to 20 lbs
M — 5–35 lbs
L — 30-65 lbs
XL — 60-90 lbs
XXL — 85 lbs and over
To determine the best size KONG for your dog, first consider their head and mouth size. The largest ring of the KONG should be bigger than the back of your dog’s mouth. If you have a multi-dog household, size all your KONGs to the largest dog as a safety precaution. If your dog is between sizes or you are uncertain, it’s always best to size up.
Choosing the right KONG is key to ensuring your dog’s play remains safe, engaging, and enjoyable. With a variety of sizes and strengths available, you can find the right toy for your dog’s needs.
